2012 Match Reports

Intermediate Back Door Round 1 - Raheens 0-14  v  Straffan 1-7 : 24 Aug 2012

Raheens Team :- Liam Power, John Lawlor, Andrew Early, Pat Courtney Garret Byrne, Graham Waters, Darren Earley Shane Power, Tim Dunleavy, John Jennings, Alan Igoe, Cathal Carr, Noel Byrne, Stephen Riordan, Ross McMahon.

Raheens started this game well and tore into Straffan with Stephen Riordan scoring a point within 5 mins, which was then followed by another from Noel Byrne. Straffan replied with 2 points from frees. Alan Igoe scored 2 points in the 16th and 20th minutes which left Raheens leading 4pts v 2pts. Straffan replied with 3 pts from play. After 10 mins Garret Byrne was blood substituted for Paddy O'Brien (Gareth retook his place before half time). Then a big blow to Raheens when Stephen Riordan was injured in the 28 min, he was replaced on the field with Martin Taaffe who got stuck into the role of full forward straight away. Raheens in the first half coped well against the wind with the backs handling Straffan and at half time Raheens were up by 1 pt.

The second half started out with Raheens on top straight away, our midfielders dominating. Scores came swiftly from John Jennings and a super point from Shane Power and Cathal Carr. Then an Alan Igoe free gave Raheens another pt. then score now being Raheens 8pt Straffan 5pt. At this stage Raheens were well on top, the backs in flying form, the forwards were scoring at will with 2 more pts. from play from Ross McMahon and Cathal Carr. Then Raheens were dealt a blow with Martin Taaffe getting injured and the young David Fitzpatrick stepping in very well. Straffan replied with 2 pts. from frees. Then Shane Power and Noel Byrne secured another 2 from play. Straffan scored a goal but this did not stop Raheens as they retook control of the game and Alan Igoe got another 2 pts. from frees . These were the last scores got and the game was over. This was one of the best performances from Raheens all year. To be fair this was a great team effort with excellent performances across the field from goalie out. Let's hope we can turn next week's game into another great win for Raheens. Full Time Score Raheens 0-14 v Straffan l- 7.

U10 South Board Fixture: Tuesday 15th May

Raheens U10 blue team had a great win in their last match of the spring league against Round Towers last Tuesday. Raheens got off to a flying start playing with the wind in the first half and picked off some great scores. The players never let up and continued to press, scoring freely from all over the field. In the second half Raheens kept up the same momentum which resulted in Round Towers never being able to break us down. It was an indication that the players all over the field played their part in an emphatic win and a great way to end the campaign. While everybody played their part, particular mention must go to Jack McGovern, Cathal O Toole, Cillian Magner, Sean McLoughlin and Cormac Byrne.

U12 South Board Fixture: Thursday 10th May

Raheens U12A team played their third game on Thursday against Ballykelly. It was real battle for both teams with Raheens backs under pressure from the word go and never gave up. In the second half our half forwards and full forward line battled well and got some brilliant scores. In the end Ballykelly were to strong for us. Although we didn't win the match the players played with great heart and determination and their skill has improved every week. Final score Ballykelly 4-9 to Raheens 2-7. Best played for Raheens were Shane Morrell, Dillon Green and Brendan O'Connell.

U10 South Board Fixture: Tuesday 8th May

Another tough away fixture for Raheens U10 Blue team. Both teams fought well and scores were scarce with both defences holding strong.  Raheens shaded the first half with scores from Callum McCall and Niall Tierney. More scoring opportunities came in the second half for both sides both from open play and frees. Defences were still on top however and there were strong performances from Michael Dempsey and Harry Byrne in particular.  Niall Tierney and Jack Higgins added to the Raheens scores but in a tight game Sarsfields narrowly shaded it the end by a point.

U10 South Board Fixture: Tuesday 8th May

The under 10 yellow team scored a great win over a strong St Laurences side in St Laurences. Raheens got off to a flying start playing some of the best flowing football we have seen, picking off some great scores from play. The determination and skill from Raheens was great to see, from catching, breaking the ball, passing and scoring. It was evident that the hard work in training the last few weeks is really paying off. Michael O Brien was solid in goal as was our defence. The midfield partnership of Paul Dolan and Alan Waters never looked in trouble and pushed forward at every oppertunity. The forwards picked off some lovely scores and ran out deserved winners at the end. Best for Raheens on the day were Michael O Brien, Paul Dolan, Brian Waters, Darragh O Shaughnessy, Cathal O Toole and Alex Donnelly.

It was the first ever game for the Celbridge girls and our girls proved to be a bit too strong for them. Playing the Go Game rules the mentors ran the players on throughout the game. Raheens showed some good passing  moves, approached the ball well and created and finished some fine scores. Best on the day were the Kielty twins (Grace and Sally), Lauren Nolan (making her debut), Sadhbh Carpenter, Rachel Ryan, Aoife Kane, Sinéad Winder and Anna O' Donovan.

U8 South Board Fixture: 5th May

The U8 team played the second of their South Board fixtures at home to Moorefield last Saturday morning. Raheens dominated the first half scoring some excellent points giving them a half time lead. In the second half, Moorefield came back strongly matching Raheens score for score.

The players displayed good passing skills and played more as a unit in this game. Strong numbers, unfortunately, meant that playing time was restricted but players didn’t complain and a good time was had by all.

Best for Raheens were Dara Crowley, Luke O’Donovan, Jamie McLoughlin and Fionn Cooke.

U12 South Board Fixture: 3rd May

U10 South Board Fixture: 24thApril

A 2nd consecutive victory for the Raheens U-10 yellow team, this time away to Athy. With impressive performances from Michael O’Brien, Cathal O’Toole and Ben Early in defence, Raheens dominated possession with an excellent midfield partnership of Oisin Keogh and Jack McGovern. Scoring proved difficult but Brian Waters chipped in a couple of nicely taken points.

The U10 Blues 2nd league encounter was a home match against Moorefield. Moorefield started the stronger and took an early lead. As the first half went on Raheens began to find their form and the match became more even. Niall Tiernan starting in the forward line began to drop deeper and this helped Raheens keep more possession. Scores were traded and Moorefield narrowly shaded the first half. Moorefield again started the second half stronger and, despite good work in both midfield and defence, managed to put over a few scores in succession. Raheens rallied as a team with Sean McGloughlin and Michael Dempsey securing the backline allowing Cormac Byrne to provide extra energy in midfield to support the good forward running of Adam Delmer. Raheens began to find their scoring touch both from frees and open play with Niall Tierney scoring another couple in the second half. A great effort by both teams and well matched at the end of the game which Moorefield narrowly edged by 2 scores.

U/16 Div 2 League semi final

Confey 2.09    Raheens A 1-11

In a reversal of last week’s league game, Confey pipped Raheens by a point in an enthralling game on Monday evening. After a tentative first half, which had both teams at 0-4, the second half opened up and there were some great passages of football on display. Raheens got off to a dream start in the second half recording 1-2 in two minutes. Confey almost immediately replied with a goal and the rest of the game ebbed and flowed with Confey eventually coming out on top. The club wishes James O’Brien a speedy recovery from his head injury. The club would also like to thank David and Jodie Bursey for the medical attention they gave James in his moment of need. Best for Raheens were Will Jennings, Matthew Bursey (despite a chest infection), Thomas Flanagan and Colm Power.

Scorers  C Power 0-6, T Flanagan  1-2, M Waters, J O’Brien and S Lloyd 0-1 each.

U12 South Board Fixture: 20th April

Kilcullen 2 - 5 Raheens 2 - 4. Raheens went into a 7 point lead early in the second half but were
unfortunate to let in 2 goals. Best for Raheens were Cian Condon and Adam Carton who defended
admirably. Josh Murphy and Eoin Gallagher showed very well while Ross Carpenter and Michael
McGovern worked tirelessly.
Next game away to Robertstown, Friday 27th April @ 7pm

U10 South Board Fixture: 17thApril

The under 10 Blue team played their first match of the season away to Athy last Tuesday the 17th. It proved to be a challenging encounter with good performances throughout. We got off to a solid start and held our own for much of the first half. In the second half our opponents pulled away but we never gave up and continued to press which resulted in a very well worked goal in the closing stages. There were very good performances all over the park with Oisin Keogh, Harry Byrne and Henry Bergin doing particularly well on the day.

The U10 Yellow team’s first league outing of the year was a home fixture against Castlemitchell on a cold and windy night.  Both teams fought hard and put in a lot of effort to combat the windy conditions. Both teams played well but as time went on Raheens looked the more comfortable and began to take control.  Strong performances at the back by Michael Dempsey and Cathal O’Toole and in midfield by Jack McGovern and Jack Higgins allowed Raheens the majority of possession.   Scores came regularly from both midfield and the forward line to give Raheens a half time lead.  While there was no abatement to the conditions in the second half the confidence of the team increased and the defence remained secure.   Scores continued to come and Callum McCall helped himself to 3 second half scores after playing the first half in goals.  Castlemitchel continue to fight hard to keep Raheens on their toes throughout.   A good win in the end for Raheens and a solid start to the league campaign.

U8 South Board Fixture: 20thApril

The U8 team played the first of their South Board fixtures away to Sarsfields last Friday evening. There was an excellent turnout (23 players) and Raheens more than matched a very strong Sarsfields team in all areas of the pitch in both matches played.

The players showed that they have lost none of their skills over the winter months with excellent displays of passing, kicking and tackling.

There were particularly good performances from Daragh Cunningham, Ciaran Kavanagh, Gavin Thompson, Fionn MacCarthy, Nicolas Hore, Andrew Dunne, Peter Kerrigan, and Fiachra Butler.

The Sarsfields coaches were very impressed with the players, describing this encounter as the toughest match that their team has ever had.

Thanks to all the coaches in Sarsfields for their hospitality and we look forward to many more encounters in the future.

U16 Div 2 League    April 17 2012

Confey 1-5  Raheens ‘A’ 2-10

Raheens recorded a good away win in their last match of their league campaign. The win has left them with 8 pts from 14 and a creditable third position. Ironically, they will now play Confey again in the semi final.

Confey were missing some of their stronger players, so the return match will be a different proposition. Whilst the lads played well, they cannot afford to be as wasteful in front of goals.

Best for Raheens…Conor Earley, David Mather, Will Jennings, William McDonald, Jason Earley, Shane Crowley and Colm Power
